The Dash 8 as a maritime patrol & ISR platform
With more than 620 aircraft delivered to over 70 operators, the De Havilland Canada Dash 8 is one of the most widely fielded turboprops in the world, and one of the most frequently missionized. Long-range fuel tanks, bulged observation windows, drop hatches, and an in-flight-openable rear door have made converted Dash 8s the backbone of coast guard and border surveillance fleets from the North Sea to the Caribbean. The type combines jet-like transit speed with low-and-slow search performance, operates from short and unpaved runways, and offers a cabin large enough for multiple operator workstations plus a full relief crew.
AIMS-ISR on the Dash 8: operationally proven
AIMS-ISR is not a paper integration on this platform. It flies operationally on missionized Dash 8s today. Force Multiplier is the contracted-ISR Dash 8 operated by CarteNav’s parent company PAL Aerospace. It carries AIMS-ISR as its mission system, managing radar, EO/IR, AIS, ESM, and communications across missions exceeding ten hours on station. The same aircraft has flown Channel surveillance for the UK Home Office’s Small Boats Operational Command, delivering intelligence ashore through AIMS-C4.
The Netherlands Coastguard operates two Dash 8 maritime surveillance aircraft with AIMS-ISR in the air and AIMS-C4 providing the common operating picture ashore. And in the Caribbean, the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard’s Dash 8s replaced their legacy mission system with AIMS-ISR, supporting counter-narcotics operations that seized 37,000 kg of drugs in a single year, at 99.8% mission reliability.

Dash 8-400 and the P-4: room to grow
The largest and fastest member of the family, the Dash 8-400, cruises at 360 knots with a structural payload over 18,000 lb. It is the basis of the Dash 8 P-4, the fully missionized maritime patrol variant being developed by PAL Aerospace and De Havilland Canada with mission endurance beyond eight hours.
