The NOTAR advantage in urban policing
The MD 520N and MD 902 are defined by a single engineering choice: the NOTAR no-tail-rotor design. This changes how light helicopters operate over cities. Replacing the conventional tail rotor with a shrouded fan cuts the acoustic signature decisively. A quieter helicopter means longer observation windows before subjects react, and better community tolerance for sustained overflight.
NOTAR also delivers agility. The MD airframes hold position in confined airspace, track fast-moving subjects, and reposition for sensor geometry without the committed turns larger platforms need. They are quiet and responsive, exactly what city policing demands.
AIMS-ISR on the MD fleet
AIMS-ISR has been integrated with the MD helicopters to put full mission capability at the tactical flight officer’s position or a cabin console. EO/IR sensor control, real-time moving maps, and mission recording appear on one display without adding to the pilot’s workload.
Every patrol becomes an evidence record with timestamped, georeferenced mission data for operational review, training, and court. The AIMS-C4 air-to-shore link shares live intelligence with ground command as the situation develops.
Mission profiles
- Urban patrol & surveillance: low-signature overwatch, subject tracking, and pursuit support in city airspace
- Evidence & coordination: recorded, court-ready mission data with real-time sharing to ground units and command
